HICS Tentative Schedule

The 2013 school calendar was created by the HICS establishment committee.  It was decided that the HICS calendar and schedule will accommodate families that have other children not attending HICS in the Department of Education (DOE) by starting school after the traditional 8:00 start time.  Yearly School Calendar will follow the Department of Education to assist siblings not at HICS.  The challenge of estimating dates without the DOE calendar was not knowing the reporting dates, the professional development dates, and the vacation dates etc.  The HICS first year calendar is a tentative calendar based on previous DOE calendars.

The tentative yearly and weekly calendars demonstrate meeting the HICS mission statement and goals of academic achievement, parental involvement and a positive school environment.  Included are data meetings, parent partnership events and student celebrations.  HICS plans to adopt a policy of “bell to bell and wall to wall” which caters to the idea that instruction begins at the bell and ends at the bell while the student work is posted on each wall.

Focus on Data
Student data analysis for progress is scheduled weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly.  Research has shown that working with target students who do not acquire the designated standards with differentiated instruction assists the students in meeting benchmarks.

HICS plans to protect instructional time and support good learning as follows:

1 All learners should be in school for the full 180 days (186 days for teachers)
2 Teaching and learning starts on the first day of each term with bell to bell and wall to wall.
3 Minimum instruction hours per grade must be observed (this excludes assemblies, safety drills etc. meals).
4 Education excursions must be linked to and enhance curriculum. Applications for excursions must be submitted to the school director at least 6 weeks in advance of the intended date.
